The Story of WellO2

From Aulis Kärkkäinen

WellO2 Breathing Exercise Device. Innovation To Help You Live, Feel And Breathe Better.

It all began way before I was born.

I had a breathing problem that was passed on to me from one of my ancestors. It was very scary for me to deal with wheezing and shortness of breath, particularly during the dark hours of the cold nights in the winter. My strongest childhood memories are all related to how breathing. Looking back, I was afraid I was suffocating.

Back in the 1950s, I heard stories of how people with lung diseases ended up in a sanatorium. I did not want to leave home.  That was the reason I tried my best to keep my breathing problems -- secretive. And that was also why my problem was not diagnosed. Living in those days taught me to adjust myself to minor wheezing and other minor illnesses.

Then, I got to participate in skiing competitions. Right from the beginning, I felt like I was losing my oxygen even though I took off fast.  I was perplexed, but that made me think how I was not a very athletic person. I started focusing my energy on thinking about what other people need.

After I graduated primary school, I settled into working life right away. Anything that involved hard physical or intense physical work -- helped my airways stay open. They were quite wheezy sometimes, but I managed. But I have come to realization: hard work saved me from suffocating in the mucus and snot. I mean, I’m like a walking mucus factory my whole life.

As I transitioned from manual labour to more mental work as an entrepreneur, my body stopped defending me. I started to develop the breathing problems.

In the early 2000s, my business ‘caught up’ with my breathing problems, and my body rebelled. Cramps, worsening insomnia, and cardiac arrhythmia -- i had them all.

I did not let the condition control my life -- rather, I was always trying to find solutions. I was a sauna enthusiast due to how easy it was for me, as a child, to breathe more easily in the sauna. Steam and humidity affected my breathing. Then, the moment I went to a healthcare centre to treat my respiratory problems, I was given an empty medicine bottle and a piece of tubing by an experienced nurse. She urged me to blow in the bottle.

Doing that, it relieved the wheezing. Since I consider myself a pro problem solver, I thought more about this experience and combined two things. Positive expiratory pressure could open up the airways, which enabled the steam to travel very deep into the affected area. Right then, I thought steam inhalation’s efficiency could be improved. All I had to do was create a single well-designed device that combined these two solutions.

I made the first rudimentary prototype from scratch. I was positive that I was on the right track after the first experiment -- that the idea of my ‘device’ would work well.

I set up a team to develop the right prototype. We called it as respiratory therapy device and came up with the name ‘WellO2’

We all know how it would often take a long time to execute an idea into a commercial innovation. The process involved creating numerous designs and solving manufacturing problems before we presented the product to consumers. Long story short, WellO2 is here now. We have gotten the type-approval and started selling in Finnish pharmacies in October-November 2016

For more than 10 years, I have been using my own WellO2 every morning and evening for a few minutes.

With the device, it helps my lungs work better. It also reduces the occurrence of the usual cramps and arrhythmias.  Even better, I have a clearer singing voice and I sleep better.

Although, I still have very sensitive reactions to numerous irritants, such as flowers, scents, garments, air pollutants, and more. I cannot always predict the potential exposures, so I would still have wheezing and shortness of breath (dyspnea) occasionally. In my case, the exhalation values may fall by 20%-50%. As a home remedy, I use Wello to deal with the situation. For about 10-15 seconds, I blow into the device with a long, gentle exhalation. Then, the warm steam calmly fill my lungs, which combines replacement air through a different opening. After every blow-suck repetition, I breathe freely a few times before repeating. The repetitions help increase my breathing capacity.  After 5-10 of inhaling and exhaling sessions, my breathing values are approaching to normal

Through my own experimentation, I have set the pace for using the device daily:

– In the morning after a long night, I open my breathing with Wello for 5-10 reps (This is done while I wait for my morning coffee).

– In the evening, I repeat the same. If I go for jogging sessions, I open my breathing when I leave, and I have a better breathing flow

– If I wake up at night with shortness of breath, I do a Wello exercise which normally stops the mucus factory and soothes the situation.

This method is called WellO2 Respiratory Therapy. I repeat it every morning and evening and more often if necessary. After Wello, my lungs stayed clean.  The mucus does not build up in the lungs and I can breathe easily.

Compared to the early 1990s, the present day of lung function values measured using spirometry are about 10 percent better -- meaning they are 1.4 times better than the average of healthy people in my age.

Under the management of a wellness technology company, Hapella -- the story of WellO2 continues. The company transformed the development of the prototype into a unique commercial product, the Respiratory Therapy device,. The device was first launched on the domestic market, in Finland.

From my experience, Wello is recommended to anyone of you out there who wants to have a better respiratory well-being. When you have a better quality of breathing, you support your body’s vitality and ultimately your life quality. I also recommend the device for people who, for whatever reason, cannot seem to keep up with their fitness through adequate exercise. WellO2 breathing therapy can support your well-being while sitting at a kitchen table.
