What breathing exercises can you do to have a better singing voice?

Nose breathing

  • Deeply inhale through the nose while counting to three slowly.
  • Maintain the apex of the inhale while counting to three slowly.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth while counting to three.
  • Continue to hold the end of the exhalation while counting to three slowly.
  • At least three times more, repeat the cycle.

Breathing while lying down on your back

  • Lie on your back on a yoga mat, thick towel, or blanket with your arms by your sides and your feet somewhat apart on the ground (knees will point toward the ceiling as a result). Ensure  your lower back is firmly connected to the ground.
  • Slowly count to four while inhaling deeply and seeing the floor beneath your back expanding both in length and width.
  • Exhale slowly and deliberately through the nose or the mouth while counting to four. Try your best to keep the feeling of expansiveness you experience on the inhale.
  • Repeat the steps a minimum of three times (with a mix of three cycles of inhaling and exhaling through the nose, then three cycles of inhaling and exhaling through the mouth).

Straw Breathing

  • Breathe in through the mouth while counting to four slowly, as if you were inhaling through a straw. Constraint on the inhale is essential.
  • Exhale through your "straw" for four slow seconds while maintaining the same distance between your mouth and straw.
  • Once your four counts of exhalation are complete, repeat the process by inhaling through the straw for four slow counts.
  • Exhale slowly for four slow counts as soon as possible via the straw.
  • Repeat the breathing exercise for singers three times. 
  • Inhale and exhale counts of four, six, eight, ten and twelve can be gradually increased after the exercise becomes more comfortable. Remember that the "straw" space in the mouth gets smaller as the number of counts increases.

Yoga Breathing

  • Close your eyes to focus on the breathing.
  • When you feel like you've achieved roughly a quarter of your lungs' capacity, hold this breath for six to twelve seconds and exhale slowly through the nose.
  • Hold your expanded breath for six to twelve seconds without exhaling. Inhale gently again through your nose until you feel like you've achieved roughly a quarter more of your lung capacity.
  • For six to twelve seconds, inhale slowly through the nose to add more breath until you feel that you've reached roughly 75% or 3/4 of your lungs' capacity.
  • Allow yourself to fully inhale and hold that breath for six to twelve seconds without letting go of the exhalation.
  • Once you've finished inhaling, slowly exhale through your mouth. Open your eyes after you've finished exhaling.
  • Before repeating the cycle one or twice more, take a few normal breaths.
